In 1605, a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament to overthrow King James I and restore Catholic rule. Their plan, known as the Gunpowder Plot, failed, leading to their capture and execution. Today, this event is commemorated annually on November 5th as Bonfire Night, with fireworks and effigy burnings.
