What if a stolen laptop contained thousands of readable customer records, or an intercepted message could be quietly changed before it arrived? The danger is not simply that data exists, but that an unauthorised person might read, alter or remove it. This raises the central question of cryptographic protection: how can information be transformed so that it is safer, while the transformation serves the security purpose required?
