How the Inca Built an Empire Without Wheeled Transport or Conventional Writing (Lesson Plan)

This plan is for a parent teaching the associated finished lesson to a learner aged 11–16. It is designed to help the parent guide discussion, check understanding and support historical thinking without simply reading the lesson aloud or replacing it. The central question is: how did the Inca build, supply, communicate across and govern a large empire without making wheeled transport or conventional writing central? Keep returning to the idea that roads, bridges, runners, khipus, labour, agriculture, storage and political authority worked as one connected system. Present achievement and human cost together: Inca rule involved engineering, organisation, cooperation and redistribution, but also compulsory labour, conquest, resettlement and unequal power.
