How Emergency Contraception Works

If contraception was not used or did not work as intended, how can pregnancy sometimes still be prevented afterwards? Emergency contraception is healthcare used after sex to reduce the chance of pregnancy when contraception was absent or may have failed. It lowers a risk, but it is not the same as continuing contraception or ending an established pregnancy.
