A location dot on your phone can seem almost magical: how can it know where you are without seeing you? The answer is that the phone receives radio signals from navigation satellites and uses measurements to calculate its position. The satellites normally broadcast information outwards; they do not watch your phone or ask it to report its location. This difference is the first step towards understanding satellite navigation.
