How Select Committees Scrutinise Government

How can a small group of MPs make a government minister explain and defend what a department has done? The answer is through a select committee, a parliamentary body that examines government work rather than carrying it out. Its central purpose is scrutiny: careful examination of decisions, actions, evidence and results to identify strengths, weaknesses or problems. This makes accountability possible even when the committee is not itself in charge of the department.
