How Scientists Read Earth’s History in Ice Cores

How can a cylinder of old ice reveal what Earth’s atmosphere and environment were like long ago? The answer begins with snowfall. In particular polar regions and some high mountain glaciers, snow can build up over many years without completely melting. Each new snowfall covers older snow, creating layers that may preserve clues from the time when they formed.
