The Geography of the Amazon Beyond the Rainforest

If the Amazon were only a rainforest, why would it contain major cities, international borders, farms, mines, ports, highways and one of the world’s largest river transport networks? The answer is that “Amazon” names several overlapping geographical areas, not one precisely fixed place.
